The ISO 9001 Standard is going through another round of revision. The 5th Edition of ISO 9001 is expected to be released in 2015 (or 16).

The revised version of ISO 14001, the international standard for environmental management, is on target for 2015 . Reported back in 2012 that the update was due in January 2015, but this has now been delayed until approx June 2015.

The internationally acclaimed standard for information security management (ISO/IEC 27001) and accompanying ISO/IEC 27002, ‘Code of practice for information security management controls’ have been revised, with the 2013 versions released last October.

  • What are the main changes?
  • The revised standard has been written using the new high level structure, which is common to all new management systems standards. This will make integration straight forward when implementing more than one management system
  • Terminology changes have been made and some definitions have been removed or relocated
  • Risk assessment requirements have been aligned with BS ISO 31000
  • Management commitment requirements have a focus on “leadership”
  • Preventive action has been replaced with “actions to address, risks and opportunities”
  • SOA requirements are similar, with more clarity on the need to determine controls by the risk treatment process
  • Controls in Annex A have been modified to reflect changing threats, remove duplication and have a more logical grouping. Specific controls have also been added around cryptography and security in supplier relationships.
  • Greater emphasis is on setting objectives, monitoring performance and metrics

A new ISO standard, ISO 45001, on occupational health and safety management system requirements is being produced by a Project Committee, ISO PC 283, with the intention of publication in October 2016. The standard will be aligned with ISO 9001 (Quality Management) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management), which are themselves undergoing revision and are due for publication in 2015.

The project committee responsible for the production of this work met for the first time in London between 21 and 25 October 2013 and produced its first working draft. There are at present approximately 50 countries and international organizations such as the International Labour Organization involved in this work.
